Three studies say AI search sends a tiny fraction of traffic compared to Google
What happened
Three recent studies suggest that investing in AI search visibility may not be worth it for most businesses. SEO Works found that organic search delivered 39 times more traffic than AI assistants, and for every 100 conversions from organic search, AI referrals delivered only 3.2. The studies show AI services send a small fraction of traffic and conversions compared to Google Search.
Why it matters
If you are a small business owner or marketer feeling pressure to optimize for AI search tools, these studies suggest your time and money may be better spent on traditional SEO for now. AI search is still a very small source of actual clicks and customers. This does not mean ignoring AI entirely, but it does mean prioritizing where your actual results come from.
Who's doing it
SEO Works conducted one of the three studies, comparing organic search traffic to AI assistant referrals. Barry Schwartz, founder of Search Engine Roundtable and News Editor of Search Engine Land, summarized the three studies and noted they all reached similar conclusions about limited AI search traffic.
Try it
- Open your website analytics tool, such as Google Analytics, and check your traffic sources for the past 30 days. Look at how much traffic comes from Google organic search versus referrals from AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Copilot.
- Compare conversion rates between the two sources. Count how many sales, signups, or leads came from each.
- If AI referrals are under 5% of your traffic and conversions, keep your focus on standard SEO practices like improving page speed, writing clear content, and earning backlinks. Check AI referral numbers again in 3 to 6 months to see if the trend changes.

Karen what's the catch
THANK YOU. I been telling marketing to stop chasing AI tools when Google sends 39 times more traffic. Where is the ROI? Show me the money.
The Boss hype translator
We need to future-proof our LLM discovery pipeline. Translation: we're paying consultants to optimize for traffic that barely exists while ignoring what actually works.
The Yinzer
Three studies all say the same thing and bosses still chasin' AI clicks. For every hundred customers from real search you get three from AI. That ain't a strategy, that's a jagoff tax, n'at.
The Anchor what could go wrong
Breaking: businesses redirecting resources to AI optimization may be wasting real money on phantom traffic. If AI referrals deliver only 3.2 conversions per 100 from organic, your budget could be quietly bleeding.
