Google AI Overviews now appear on 88% of commercial search keywords, study finds
What happened
A Semrush study tracking 400 commercial keyword modifiers found AI Overview coverage rose from 45.75% in September 2025 to 88% in August 2026. Ecommerce queries saw the largest jump, from 32.62% to 85.11%. By August 2026, 12 of 15 industry-and-modifier combinations had coverage of at least 80%.
Why it matters
If your business relies on search traffic for product comparisons, pricing pages, or 'best of' lists, Google's AI now summarizes answers at the top of search results for most of these queries. This means fewer people may click through to your actual page. Content teams need to understand whether their keywords trigger AI Overviews and adjust strategy accordingly.
Who's doing it
Semrush tracked 400 commercial modifier keywords across 15 industry-and-modifier combinations. The study focused on keywords that SEO and content marketing teams commonly target, such as product comparisons, pricing, reviews, and 'best' option queries.
Try it
- Go to google.com and search for a commercial keyword related to your business, such as 'best [your product] 2026' or '[your product] vs [competitor].' Look at whether an AI-generated summary appears at the top of the results.
- Repeat this for 5 to 10 keywords your customers would use, including pricing and review terms. Note which ones trigger AI Overviews.
- For keywords that trigger AI Overviews, check whether your business is mentioned in the summary. If not, consider updating your content to be more directly comparable and factual so AI tools are more likely to reference you.

The Boss hype translator
This is a paradigm shift in SERP real estate. Our omnichannel content strategy needs to optimize for LLM summarization, which basically means Google reads your page so customers don't have to.
Karen what's the catch
So Google scrapes MY product reviews to build THEIR summary and I get ZERO clicks? WHO authorized this? Do they pay me for my content?
The Yinzer BS detector
Eighty-eight percent of commercial searches now got that robot answer box. Yinz spend all that time writin' comparison pages just so a jagoff AI can summarize it and steal yer traffic, n'at.
The Professor
The study tracked 400 commercial modifier keywords, not all search queries. Coverage rising from 45.75% to 88% applies specifically to the 15 industry-and-modifier combinations examined.
