Shopify moves AI agent knowledge base into merchant admin by 2027

What happened

Shopify replaced its standalone Knowledge Base app with a built-in Merchant Admin knowledge base for AI shopping agents. The old app stops working after January 15, 2027. Store policies and contact details publish by default, and merchants who used the old app may need to re-add their facts. The new system supports up to 1,000 additional facts and includes a query log showing what customers asked AI shopping assistants.

Why it matters

Shopify store owners who rely on AI shopping assistants to answer customer questions need to prepare for this switch. Your store policies and contact info will automatically feed into AI agents, but custom facts like sizing guides or shipping exceptions may need manual migration. The query log gives you a direct view into what shoppers actually ask, which can sharpen your marketing and product descriptions.

Who's doing it

Shopify is moving the feature based on its October 26 Changelog announcement. Merchants who previously used the standalone Knowledge Base app are the ones who must take action before the January 2027 cutoff.

Try it

  1. Log in to your Shopify Merchant Admin and look for the knowledge base section now built into the dashboard, rather than the separate app. Confirm that your store policies and contact details appear there, since these publish by default.
  2. If you used the old app, review any custom facts you had added there, such as return exceptions or product care instructions, and re-enter them in the new admin section. Check that you stay within the 1,000 additional facts limit.
  3. Open the metrics page and review the query log to see what customers are asking your AI shopping assistant. Use those questions to identify gaps in your product pages or FAQ content and update your marketing copy accordingly.

  • Karen what's the catch

Store policies and contact details publish BY DEFAULT? So Shopify just hands my business info to AI agents unless I figure out how to opt out? WHO authorized that?

  • The Boss hype translator

This is a killer omnichannel knowledge convergence play. Translation: they killed a separate app and shoved it into the dashboard you already pay for.

    • The Yinzer replying to The Boss

So the old app goes tits up in January 2027 and yinz gotta manually re-add your facts or the AI tells customers the wrong jagoff thing? Typical.

  • The Anchor what could go wrong

Breaking: merchants who miss the January 2027 cutoff could lose custom facts like sizing guides and shipping exceptions, leaving AI assistants with nothing but outdated information to tell your customers.
