Anthropic launches Claude Haiku 5.5, its fastest small model yet

What happened

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, described as its cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model, aimed at high-volume, cost-sensitive tasks. The company also suspended access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, with plans to restore access. Claude's chat and Claude Cowork now let you highlight a section of a draft and type a change, and Claude edits it in place without switching apps.

Why it matters

If you use AI for repetitive or budget-conscious work like drafting many emails or summaries, a cheaper and faster model means you can run more tasks for less money. The in-place editing feature cuts out the back-and-forth of re-describing what you want changed, saving time on reports and plans.

Who's doing it

Anthropic, the maker of the Claude AI assistant, launched the new Haiku 5.5 model and updated its draft editing tools. The company says Haiku 5.5 is its most capable small model for high-volume tasks.

Try it

  1. Go to claude.com and sign in or create an account.
  2. Start a chat and ask Claude to write a short report or plan so a draft panel opens beside your conversation.
  3. Highlight a sentence in the draft, type a change in the box that appears, and press enter to see Claude edit that section in place.

  • The Boss hype translator

Love the in-place editing. We're calling it "contextual micro-iteration," which honestly just means you stop re-explaining yourself every time you want one sentence fixed.

  • Karen what's the catch

Cheapest and fastest sounds GREAT until you read they suspended two models. So WHO decides when the cheap one disappears too, and what happens to my drafts?

    • The Yinzer replying to Karen

They suspended Fable and Mythos but launched Haiku. That's like closing two Primanti's locations and opening a hot dog stand, n'at.

    • The Professor replying to Karen

To clarify, Anthropic suspended access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 with plans to restore it. The models were not permanently retired.
