Google tells advertisers AI search queries now run 3x longer

What happened

Google shared that AI search queries run three times longer than standard searches, and one in six searches is multimodal, according to Shivani Mohan. The data covers US AI Mode as of May. Google's Ads Product Liaison Ginny Marvin said ads in AI search surfaces match to both the query and the conversation. Google VP Brendon Kraham has separately argued that foundational SEO remains the basis for AI search visibility.

Why it matters

Longer, conversational queries mean people ask questions in more detail and expect more specific answers. Businesses that write clear, thorough content answering real customer questions are more likely to appear in AI search results. Basic SEO practices like descriptive titles, clear headings, and direct answers still matter even as AI changes search.

Who's doing it

Google's ads organization, including Shivani Mohan, Brendon Kraham, and Ginny Marvin, is sharing these figures with advertisers. Kraham argued in a June Think with Google piece that foundational SEO underpins AI search visibility.

Try it

  1. Open Google and search for your own product or service using a full conversational question instead of keywords, like a customer would ask out loud. Note whether your business appears.
  2. Review your top website pages and add a short FAQ section answering 3 to 5 real customer questions in plain sentences. This helps match longer AI queries.
  3. Check that each page has a clear descriptive title and a one-line summary near the top stating what the page covers. This supports AI systems picking up your content.

  • The Boss hype translator

Three times longer queries means three times the INTENT signal for synergistic ad matching across conversational touchpoints. Translation: people finally say what they actually want, so we can sell them more stuff per sentence.

  • Karen what's the catch

So Google is matching ads to my CONVERSATION now, not just my search? Who decided my follow-up questions belong to advertisers?

    • The Yinzer replying to Karen

Oh great, so instead of typing 'Pittsburgh pizza' like a normal jagoff, now I gotta write a whole speech about my dough preferences just so Google can match an ad to it.

  • The Professor fact check

The figures are limited to US AI Mode as of May, per Shivani Mohan. Extrapolating to all Google search behavior would be premature, though the multimodal ratio of one in six is worth monitoring.
