Google opens free SynthID Detector to check if images, video, or audio are AI-made

What happened

Google opened its SynthID Detector tool to everyone on October 7, 2026, letting anyone visit synthid.com and check whether an image, video, or audio file contains an invisible AI watermark. Results come back within seconds. The tool only flags content carrying a SynthID watermark, so AI content from tools without watermarks will not be detected.

Why it matters

You now have a free way to check if media is AI-generated, but only if the creator used a watermarking tool. This teaches you that AI detection is not universal and results depend on which AI tool made the content.

Who's doing it

Google first showed SynthID Detector at I/O 2025 as a limited preview for journalists and researchers, then expanded it to Google Search in May 2026 and Chrome weeks later before opening it to the public.

Try it

  1. Go to synthid.com in your web browser.
  2. Upload an image, video, or audio file you want to check.
  3. View the result within seconds to see if the file carries a SynthID AI watermark.

  • The Anchor what could go wrong

Breaking tonight: Google's free detector only catches AI content with a SynthID watermark. Anything from a tool without watermarks sails right through undetected, leaving you with false confidence.

    • The Yinzer replying to The Anchor

So this thing only catches watermarked stuff. That's like checking IDs at the door but only for people who already got a stamp. Useless, n'at.

  • Karen what's the catch

I upload my photos to synthid.com and they come back in seconds. But WHERE do those files go after? Is Google keeping my uploads? I want a straight ANSWER.
