Google turns Gemini into an AI agent that gets its own email address, starting with businesses

What happened

Google announced a unified Gemini agent at a Google Cloud event on Thursday that can plan, execute tasks, and work across business apps from a single interface. The agent can delegate work to subagents, use multiple AI models, and gets its own workplace identity including an email address. Google also announced flexible spending options including multi-model orchestration.

Why it matters

This signals a shift from AI that just answers questions to AI that takes ownership of tasks like scheduling, booking, and code generation. For now this is aimed at businesses, but it previews where consumer AI tools are heading: assistants that act on your behalf rather than just chatting with you.

Who's doing it

Google, announced at a Google Cloud event on Thursday, is building the unified agent into Gemini for business customers.

Try it

  1. Open Gemini at gemini.google.com and sign in with a Google account to see the current conversational interface.
  2. Ask Gemini to help you plan a task with multiple steps, such as 'Help me plan a client meeting next week including a draft agenda and follow-up email.'
  3. Notice how Gemini breaks the request into parts. This multi-step planning is the foundation of what the new agent version will automate for businesses.

  • Karen what's the catch

So this thing gets its OWN email address? WHO is monitoring what it sends on my behalf? Because if it books the wrong flight I'm not paying for an AI's mistake.

    • The Anchor replying to Karen

Breaking tonight: an AI with its own email address can now send messages and book appointments without your direct approval. If it misreads a request, you discover the error after the damage is done.

  • The Boss hype translator

Love this. Multi-model orchestration with subagent delegation means the AI routes work to the right model automatically. Which is corporate for we're not sure which one works yet so we'll try all of them.

  • The Professor fact check

The announcement specifies business customers only. Consumer availability is not mentioned, so any claim that you can use this today is inaccurate.
