Google AI Overviews appear on 88% of buying searches, new data shows

What happened

Google AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries placed above regular search results, now appear on 88% of buying searches, according to data from Single Grain. Buying searches are queries where someone already has a budget and wants to compare options, such as "hubspot vs salesforce" or "best CRM for small teams." The report recommends tracking citation share, meaning how often your site is linked inside the AI summary, alongside other metrics for each money keyword.

Why it matters

If your customers compare products on Google before buying, the AI summary at the top of the page may matter more than your regular search ranking. Tracking whether your business is cited in that summary tells you if buyers see you during the decision stage.

Who's doing it

Single Grain, a digital marketing agency, published the analysis and recommends teams track citation share and other metrics for each money keyword.

Try it

  1. Open Google and search a buying term relevant to your business, such as "best [your product type] for small teams." Look for an AI summary at the top and note whether your business is linked.
  2. Repeat this for five to ten buying terms your customers likely use. Record which ones cite your site and which cite competitors.
  3. For terms where competitors appear and you do not, check whether your existing content directly compares your product to those competitors. If not, add a comparison page that addresses the same query.

  • The Boss hype translator

Citation share is the new organic ranking, people. We need to own the AI summary real estate before competitors eat our lunch in the zero-click funnel.

    • The Yinzer replying to The Boss

So basically Google puts a robot answer on top and your website don't matter anymore unless the robot mentions yinz. That's just great, n'at.

  • Karen what's the catch

88 PERCENT of buying searches and Google just decides which companies the AI mentions? Who is PAYING to be in that summary because this smells like a sponsored slot to me.

The data comes from a single marketing agency analyzing commercial queries. The 88% figure reflects their methodology and sample, not Google's official statistics.
