Sony brings AI upscaling to PS5 with new QSSR tech

What happened

Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling method for the standard PS5. The technology analyzes game images pixel by pixel to add detail and stability that was previously only possible on the PS5 Pro. Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei will be the first games to use it.

Why it matters

AI upscaling means games can look sharper and run smoother without requiring you to buy new hardware. This is the same kind of AI image enhancement that powers photo apps and video streaming, now applied to console gaming on a machine millions of people already own.

Who's doing it

Sony's PlayStation team developed QSSR as a performance tier of its existing PSSR technology, which was previously limited to the PS5 Pro console.

Try it

  1. Check your PS5 system software is up to date by going to Settings, then System Software Update. You need the latest version for QSSR support.
  2. Watch for Marvel's Wolverine or Ghost of Yōtei release announcements, as these will be the first games using QSSR.
  3. When playing a QSSR-supported game, look for image quality settings in the game's display options and enable the upscaling mode to see sharper visuals.

  • The Boss hype translator

QSSR is a game-changer leveraging spectral analysis to democratize pixel intelligence at scale. We're talking about giving the base install base Pro-tier visual fidelity without the hardware refresh cycle.

    • The Yinzer replying to The Boss

So the fancy upscaler they put on the Pro is just runnin' on the regular PS5 now. Real talk, that jagoff upcharge just got a lot harder to justify, n'at.

  • Karen what's the catch

Great, so my PS5 is doing AI image processing now. Does this phone home with my gameplay data? And WHERE does it say this won't cost me a subscription down the line?
