Blue Tees Ships AI Rangefinder. Golfers Now Have More Data Than Talent. Predictable.
The Blue Tees Captain Air is a rangefinder that layers artificial intelligence atop the familiar laser-distance formula. It combines quick target acquisition with AI-assisted accuracy improvements, sitting comfortably among existing GPS and launch monitor technologies already common on courses. The reviewer concluded it earns praise across the full spectrum of technology users, from skeptics to enthusiasts.
This is a textbook case of incremental AI deployment: rather than replacing the human, the system augments a single decision point. The mental model here is narrow AI as a sensor enhancement, not a substitute for skill. You walk away understanding that AI's most practical near-term value lives in refining inputs to decisions humans still make themselves.
Blue Tees, a golf technology company, built and shipped the Captain Air rangefinder. The review comes from Wisco Golf Addict, who tested the device on course and found its acquisition speed and accuracy noteworthy.
- Open any consumer rangefinder app on your phone, such as Golfshot or 18Birdies, and stand at a local course or open field.
- Pick a target at least 100 yards away and use the app's GPS distance feature to measure it, noting the number.
- Walk to the target and count your steps, then multiply by roughly 3 feet per step to compare your manual measurement against the app's calculation. The gap between your estimate and the app's number is exactly the kind of error AI-enhanced tools like the Captain Air aim to eliminate.
