AI Golf Swing Analysis: Precision Coaching Without a Pro Instructor

April 10, 2026 · From the archive, written in the Professor's voice before our October 2026 redesign from ieeexplore.ieee.org

What happened

Researchers developed an AI-powered golf swing analysis tool using motion capture and keyframe detection techniques to identify critical body positions during a swing. This system isolates biomechanical errors by comparing user data against professional player models, making self-training more efficient for beginners who struggle to pinpoint what to correct. The study is detailed in IEEE Xplore under document 9913343.

Why it matters

This approach teaches us to leverage AI for nuanced biomechanical feedback rather than generic advice, emphasizing targeted correction in sports training. It shifts the workflow from subjective imitation to objective, data-driven self-assessment, accelerating skill acquisition without constant human coaching.

Who's doing it

The research team behind the IEEE paper, likely affiliated with a university or sports tech lab, implemented and validated this AI tool showing measurable improvements in beginner golfers' swing technique by highlighting precise correction points.

Try it

  1. Use a smartphone or a motion capture sensor like Microsoft Kinect to record your golf swing from multiple angles.
  2. Upload the video data to an AI golf analysis tool such as Golf AI or SwingVision, which applies keyframe detection algorithms.
  3. Review the AI-generated feedback highlighting specific body positions needing correction and practice targeted drills accordingly. IEEE Xplore link: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9913343
